Sermon Topic -- ..And You Shall Love Your Neighbor As Yourself.

Nov 04, 2012 19:46

Father Joe spoke on this Saturday.

When the Talmud scholars tried to explain the commandment to love one's neighbor as oneself they used this story.

Two men owned adjacent farms.  They agreed to work together and share their produce equally.  One of the farmers was single; the other was married with several children.  The single man thought that this arrangement was unfair to the married man who had so many mouths to feed, so every night he would fill large sacks with grain and secretly carry them to his neighbor's storehouse.  The married man thought he was blessed beyond measure to have so many hands to help him while his neighbor seemed alone.  Every night he would sneak over to the barn of his neighbor to leave  large sacks of grain.  Each began to notice that no matter how much he gave away his grain stock seemed to never be depleted.   One night they met each other as they made their deliveries and each discovered what the other had been doing.  They embraced.  Legend told that the place where they met became a sacred place and eventually Solomon built his Temple there.
