Spring break...bored and broke T_T
Thanks goodness for free stuff at the internet >:D
eh don't worry. I won't see movies that deserve to be watched at the theatres/DVD. That's why I choose the new Street Fighter movie that was released this february and bombed HARD.
SOME SPOILERS BY THE WAY
Ok, first, what does this movie has to do with the videogame series?
Just the characters names and some sparse motivations.
Really, this movie is a very DRASTIC change to the characters and storyline...if there was ever a solid storyline for starters. Because let's face it, the SF games doesn't had a very compelling stories that makes you go "OMFG!". They are just there to give an excuse to see the doodles fighting.
Chun-li, tries to find his father but she doesn't work for the police. No, his dad was a businessman that was kidnapped by Bison and she sets a quest to find him and stop a "thing" named "the white rose" while being trained by
Gen, who is not longer Ryu and Ken's teacher but just a dude that has a anti-violence net. He finds chun li and traines her to fight..
Bison (No, not M. Bison...just Bison..moo?) avery very baaaaaad dude that rules shadaloo a huge crime..thingy that wants to do something to...bangkok...ok whatever...he is aided by his henchmen:
Balrog, who is a boxer that get in drugs and HAHAHAHA JUST KIDDING!!! he is not a boxer in this story just a big, huge, sexy black man (my boyfriend Michael Clarke duncan ^___^ ) that is very strong and looks HOT sweaty in a tank top and wants me to strip him and giv him a sponge bath in my lap..............sorry what? oh yeah..he is just there to aid Bison along with,
Vega, which is not longer an spanish beautiful matador in love with chun li (no really! check the character profile!) but Taboo from the Black eyed peas and he is a COOL DUUUUUUDE with his claw and last like what? 2 minutes being beated by Chun li...wow.
Along the way she finds the help of Charlie whom he likes to be called Nash (duh) and works for the Interpol and wants to defeat Bison. Sorry pals. No US army lieutenant nor best buddy or Guile. Just a british?american? interpol guy.
That's it. No ryu, ken, zangief, honda, blanka, sagat, sakura...although honestly, most of those characters aren't THAT good anyway...
As you have seen the story has NOTHING to do with the games..or just barely. But as I said that's not necesarily a bad thing.
Still, the story here is not exactly very good. The script has a lot of problems. It has lots of hole plots and many "you gotta be kidding me!" moments. The "chun li finds his dad" quest is Ok but the thing that Bison did with his daughter and the resolution of the
"white rose" being Bison's daughter...just doesn't make any sense. It has some fun moments, some dull ones and many moronic ones. Is a mix bag that never fully convinces.
The actings are another mixed carnivale. Kristin kreuk acts just like Lana Lang Dx (oh and she is not 100% chinese because her mom is canadian...yup Chun li is from Vancouver!). Chris klein.....oh dear god acted HORRIBLY! Overacted and laughable. My boyfriend acted bad but as long as he looks sexy I don't care =P Taboo...sorry man "zapatero a tus zapatos...". Robin chou who did Gen (and Liu kang in the Mortal Kombat movie) and the dude that acted Bison (the blonde dude that was the partner of Tom cruise in Minority Report) where the only ones that made a decent effort.
Not that the dialogues and script helped honestly.
The FX were meh. Better than Dragon ball and honestly, besides some blurs and hadokens (yes, seriously) they are mediocre at best.
The choreographies were nice and some fights were cool but they tend to add some stuff that makes them seem dumb. Trying to mix real fights, with cartoon ones...pretty lame.
And finally is this movie better than the Van damme one?
OF COURSE IT WAS!
The Van damme version was stupid and proud of being stupid. It was more like fan service to the SF kiddoes whit a famous action star and lots of effects.
This one tries to take some stuff from the series and gives it a more "serious" treatment with disappointing results. It never decided to be more real or more fantasy.
Also, will there be a sequel? I doubt it. This movie had a very terrible box office result. Yes I know, is this movie is better than the 1995 version then why it faired worst.
Simply because the van damme movie was released when the SF series were in the top and obviously everybody would go and watch it even if it was to bash it. Now? Fighting games became a nice genre and Street fighter is not the exception. SF4 only cattered to the people that played with it on it's time. So who would watch that movie? 30 years olders than won't make the same mistake again? or kids that don't give a damn about the series.
Bottomline: This is a very mediocre, sometimes bad, sometimes terrible, sometimes fun, sometimes ok movie. It could have been better but I wonder if that was really necessary.
