You know, I realized today that I haven' go to the movies in almost 2 months! And is not that I don't have money (I can go on wednesdays) or time (or in Saturdays) but because there is not a single movie I do want to go and see. None.
I 've seen commentaries about some flicks like the one about werewolves/vampires but after watching the trailer I think I'd better wait for the DVD..to rent.
Say what you want but the 90s was a very good decade for Hollywood: we had Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, Mission impossible, the return of James bond, american beauty, crouching tigger hidden dragon, the matrix (probably the lat original script from hollywood WITH BRAINS), sixth sense, the thin red line, being john malkovich, the blair witch project, dark city, requiem for a dream....heck even movies like Titanic and Episode 1 why not?
But now....T_T
I think that the last year I had a great film going experience was in 2001. I technically went to the movies at least once a month. TWICE on December (Harry Potter and lord of the rings). But then the number of movies that grabbed my attention got shrinking more and more and now I don't want to see any.
The only movies I am curious to watch are "Australila" because I do like Baz lhurman and is not based in a movie/book/comic/etc and "Milk" which is a biography about a very important gay activist. Directed by Gus van sant and with Sean penn in the lead role. But due to the subject I bet I won't see it until..march IF it wins an oscar.
And don't make me talk about animated movies! Ugh! with the horribly overrated combo of pixar/dreamworks...*shakes head*
The only movie I did loved this year was "The Dark Knight"...based in a comic book.
The last animated movie that touched me deep inside was "Persepolis"..a foreign traditional movie ignored by the Kungufupanda lovers
And the last, magical and original movie experience I had was from "El Laberinto del Fauno".....2 years ago!
And next year doesn't seem very well. Ugh!
I just saw this list on the net and DAMN is what like somebody readed my mind..very cliche but true.
http://old-wizard.com/top-10-proble.....-modern-movies Of course they exaggerate (Charlie and the chocolate factory is more an adaptation than a remake and is much better) but the points they do quote are very precise: too many remakes, too much CGI, too much unnecsary FX..*sighs* even wonderful autors like Tim burton (he had directed only movie adaptations), steven spielberg (ditto) and Scorsese (his last movie was a remake..A FUCKING REMAKE!) are not making things better....the only one that dares to do original stuff in Hollywoodland is M. Night Shyamalan but he tend to lost in his egocentric vision. The Happening was good but it leaves you a bit empty...
What is funny is that some of the things are happening with hollywood now, happened (a bit simmilar) in the 60's. People started to not go to movies and studios desperately made big budget movies that flopped terribly (Cleopatra everyone?). Then on the 70s, spielberg, lucas, de palma and scorsese cam eand breathed new life in it.
Many studios today had panicked that the box office is deteriorating every year and desperately they aim to the AIM kiddos with tons of remakes and comic/cartoons/manga/videogame adaptations. It works but very briefly. Many prefer to rent it or WORST to download it.
Would that mean that the next decade will see a Hollywood rebirth.
I hope so.
