Yesterday I rented "Speed Racer".
I was curious to see that movie. Not because I am a fan of the cartoon (I've seen it but never cared that much) but because I do like to pay attention to the Wachsowsky's works. They are not perfect but they are...unique.
anyway, the movie. how was it?
Well, let's put it this way: imagine how would the next Harry Potter movie end up if it was directed by Quentin tarantino?
Yeah, it was that odd. very odd. Not a bad movie but....well I understand why many didn't liked it.
Warner Bros. wanted to create a brand new franchise for children starting with this movie. They also had plans for more movies and even an animated series. But the movie was a bomb and all those plans were shelved.
And is understandable. This movie is to avant garde for children.
Just like Kill Bill is a movie geek homage, Speed Racer is an anime homage. In what sense? to everything: from the stylized visuals to the over the top and confusing storyline. Not that story wasn't that good, it was a bit predictable and "safe" but is not the kind of story a kid would like.
Mainly because it has a lot of The wachosky bros. oddness: an evil big corporation and a messianic young gifted boy that face it against. Like The Matrix for kids.
Also, many old fans of the cartoon didn't liked it. Maybe because many of the silliness that this movie had weren't as fun as they remembered them from the cartoon. The family unification message wasn't that subtle and a bit corny.
In other words, it was too sophisticated for kiddos and a bit silly for grown ups.
Visually is breathtaking. Many were whining because of the colors. well what's wrong with that? Actually, all the over the top racings and contrasting colors was exactly the point. I giggled with the races. There were just too funny and exciting! It was like watching a wu xia films or a john woo movie wth steroids...and cars.
I loved the cinematography, trying to emulate anime, with all the characters and object in focus. The climatic ending scene with the last racing was just...well honestly I can't describe it. It has to be seen to be believed.
I digged the music. With the same 60's flavor of the old cartoon, matching the racings and the characters actions perfectly.
All the performances were very well performed. Most of the dialogues were a bit dumb and the kid and the monkey were annoying but that was the point.
Yeah is not that great but I did enjoyed it. Maybe if it was created by somebody else, may had succeeded with the brats and they would created a new franchise. But they wouldn't made it that exciting and experimental.
I do recommend it. I don't guarantee that you would like it. And that's Ok. Ironically, is not a very commercial movie, but it is definitely a feast to the eyes and the imagination. ^^
