the worst flood EVER

I haven't updated in awhile. 13 weeks, huh?

The Midwest is crazy right now. It just feels all preapocalyptic. It's weird to think about how much time we've had, knowing that it's coming and just waiting around. Storm after storm after storm. It's weird to think that in the three years I've been here we've experienced a tornado, an earthquake, and now an historic flood.

The flooding has been steadily getting worse in Iowa City. I feel like we're on an island, and it's not even going to reach its peak until Tuesday. Whenever the news is on I just get sucked in to watching the destruction, with Cedar Rapids being completely submerged and all that water heading this way.

I'm glad I went and sandbagged today, and hopefully that helps protect some of the university buildings. A fair deal are already flooding.

After a friend's birthday party Wednesday night, some of us went down to this bridge just down the hill from my place to check the flooding out. It's already up to Mayflower, one of the dorms, and the bridge was closed down. A friend and I walked across the bridge and ended up getting charged with criminal trespassing. Absolutely ridic, but whatevs.

There's only one bridge across the river still open, and soon the two sides of the IC are going to be split. We might lose power and have to conserve water in the coming week, and it'll be an unbelievable amount of time until things can get back to normal.

It's just so surreal to experience it. You think that in a disaster, it comes in a flash, but it's just been creeping up on us for awhile now. And life just goes on. I go to work, I go to the bars, and just down the street people have been evacuated to shelters and the park is now a lake with the water up 3/4 of the trunk. Kinda puts things in perspective.
