This is Bob, your friendly neighborhood Clue Trout. Today we're going to talk about alternate realities and universes. What are these things, you ask? It's simple. They deal with an offshoot of canon. Canon is the manga, anime, TV show, movie, book (series), or other source material any given series may stem from. It provides all the facts for what happens to you in your series, from positive to negative.
Alternate realities follow the canon timeline for a period of time, but at a certain point they diverge and follow their own story. For instance, BNF Brawl's Ginny Weasley Yagami is in an alternate reality because her life conflicts with the canon material found in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This does not make her any less Ginny, it only means she ended up on an alternate timeline from canon. A good many other Brawlers are in some type of alternate reality. Those of you who died, you're perfect examples! :) It also explains how we keep seeing a number of the same people here over and over and over again. There are an infinite number of everyone out there.
Now that I have explained alternate realities, it should be a little easier to understand the concept of the alternate universe. The realities deal with timeline possibilities. Alternate universes differ in that they deal with the setting and storyline while keeping character design in tact. A great many fanfic writers enjoy taking their favorite characters and dropping them into a whole different world. Shishido as a crack whore is one I've seen a couple times, for example.
