I wasn't around for the previous rewatch, and I apologize if any of these are repeats. This is one of my favorite episodes (although I'm not entirely sure what I would point out as an episode that isn't a favorite), so this is actually a mix of things that I think are interesting and moments that I only noticed this time through ( ... )

Hi! Your name looked familiar and I finally figured it out. I hang out in the C6D fandom sometimes, as mary_the_fan. (Not a secret identity; I just have a bit of an icon addiction *g* so I have two accounts.) So I've probably seen you on some DS discussions or something.

I can understand the icon addiction; I keep having to rearrange things and rotate them, because there are never enough spaces. And yeah, I've seen you around over there!

I was just talking to some local fans tonight about how strange it is to start over in a new fandom, and how I'm really bad at it. They sort of laughed at me, but I think I'm nervous in part because this fandom seems so close-knit. And because people say really interesting things in the posts I've seen so far, and I feel like I'll be repeating stuff that's obvious to everyone who's been around more than three weeks.

Still, I shall persevere and maybe even get to the point of writing fic. Eventually. *g*

I know what you mean. I'm not new to BoB but I'm new to the fandom here. I guess that makes us replacements. *g*

We now return the thread to its original purpose. Sorry. :-D

2 - Others have said (WBG.com) that they're all a bit *loud* in all the episodes, as in, might draw attention. I don't know firsthand though what the cutoff point for "too loud" is in any of these circumstances. In this episode, the need for stealth is not absolute-they're not on a secret mission, it's just quiet until they get to start shooting, and they're looking for trouble, not avoiding it. But it has been mentioned.

5 - did not notice that! It is summer ... OTOH, an Atlantic storm had just passed through (thus the delay) ...

7 - "Where's the best chow?" I've never gotten it. XD please to explain.

8 - Which makeup and which scenes? Oh, the war paint? Never noticed that either! Sharp eye.

2) I think I only notice it because it would be just as simple *not* to step on the rail, and avoid the whole problem. They're awfully loud in other places, as well--but I'm also heartened that during the Brecourt scenes, Winters is shown as waiting for the guns to fire before shouting, presumably so that he's less likely to be heard by the Germans ( ... )

Re: the chow query, I've always read that as a jab at Malarkey, in that since he was seen fraternizing with "the enemy", he'd have been privy to the info regarding the best food places in Berlin aka 'the belly of the beast', since "the enemy" are currently the ones in power -> they would have access to "the best chow in Berlin". (I put "the enemy" in irony quotes 'cos I thought Malarkey meeting an Oregonian Volksdeutche is rather morbidly ironic and also cool in some way - cool as in "oo, historical details and minority experiences I never knew, interesting"). ANYWAY :D So in asking "Where's the best chow?", Toye is basically saying "Didcha get some nice inside info on Nazi comforts, you little fraternizer?".

At least that's my $0.02 :)

Huh. I hadn't thought of it as being so pointed, I guess--maybe because it seems like Toye is waiting for a response, and I assumed that was because it was a running joke. But I can see it going either way, really.

I kinda also read that pointedness as just a part of the awesome bad-assery that is Joe Toye, in that he's such a mofo he sounds annoyed even when he isn't. :P

This is true. He can't help being scary! It's just part of his charm.

I just had a new interpretation from thinking about it: the best chow is in Berlin, i.e. with the enemy. The explanation kind of fails, but this interpretation makes me laugh.

Rewatched now. Interesting, there's only that one close-up of the boot on the rail; the rest of the time they're all on the ties. Maybe it was artistic license, the director wanted that "omg boot on rail sound".

Which...yeah, okay. But they couldn't go with "crunch of gravel" instead? *g*
