I still don't get what people's problem is with "Crossroads". It's Winters' dark night of the soul! In Paris! With sleepy naked men and suspiciously friendly French boys! I could get why the Major is pissed about the whole train thing that makes him look like a pederast, but the whole "too artsy" criticism is not registering with me.
Re: footlocker -- he did warn Winters that that's where the case of whiskey was, back in "Currahee", on the Train Ride of Dripping Sexual Tension and Knee-Touching that Harry pretended to sleep through but really knew what was going on and was just being discreet...
As far as I can tell, in normal circumstances the military promotes officers according to seniority. In times of war, particularly in the case of Easy, that seems to have been violated more often than is normal--it is not normal in peacetime for a guy to go from platoon leader to battalion commander in five months, nor is it normal for a platoon leader to be given command of a company in the middle of an attack. But Heyliger was an officer with seniority who was ready to get his own company, I guess. Buck and Harry were further down the pecking order. Plus, didn't Harry have a penchant for being demoted/ passed over for scrapping off-duty...? I'm still not sure what rank/position he ended up at.
You're correct about the footlocker thing. It's established right from the first episode, from the first scene with Nix in it, that he really likes his booze. It just seems to start becoming problematic around here. (Also, now I'm reminded of the line in Winters' book where he says that he can't think of a greater honour than looking after Nix's booze. Which is just touching.)
The officers thing makes sense, now you mention it. Certainly I can see why they felt it wasn't a good idea to give Harry too much responsibility for the company, what with that short fuse of his. I think he ended up on battalion staff, an S-2.
