Fic: Wrong Turn, Chapter Three of Three

Last chapter of my fma_ihop kinkmeme fic for sara_rojo. First chapter is here, second chapter is here. I had a ludicrous amount of fun writing this, so thanks for the prompt, Sara! I've ended up having so much fun with these versions of the characters that I'm very tempted to get to work on a sequel - in which of course I'd be honour bound to resolve some of this ( Read more... )

Friending is good! Thanks again for lovely comments and for tremendously useful pick-ups of grammar and style things, especially the passive voice (don't worry about Anglophobia! It's just a bad habit).

Incidentally, my British English is something I sort of struggle with writing FMA fic, actually. Perhaps because I'm used to reading American English manga translations and subs, I really hear the characters speaking American English, so that's how I write them. I have read a couple of fics where POVs and dialogue use British English but I found it a bit jarring, especially the slang. Hagaren's Japanese, so there's technically no reason Ed shouldn't say "bloody hell" - but still, it doesn't quite sound like his voice to me personally. This said, I've spotted that British-isms do make appearances in my work from time to time. I've reasoned to myself that a slight European flavour is potentially OK for Hagaren, but I'm also keen that the British bits aren't inconsistent or distracting to the reader (whichever bit of the world they're from)! That was a bit of a tangent, by the way. Just something I've been thinking about.

That's good to know! I think my thing of writing these guys in American-flavoured English is quite subjective. And it's much easier, I think, for a Brit to do this than the other way around since we get much more American TV, movies, comics, etc. than you guys get British stuff. BTW, if you're ever writing HP fic and need someone to Brit-pick dialogue, etc., do send it my way!
