So I'm back in piano class. I was in it last semester, but I dropped it right before spring break. I missed several classes for various reasons, and I wasn't putting enough time into it. And the teacher made it hard to concentrate. But now I've got a woman who has been a piano teacher for a long time, and so far she seems like a good one. I've also been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead lately. Which makes me appreciate going to school for music so much more. All music majors have to take 4 semesters of piano, and pass a proficiency exam, as well as their primary instrument. And I can get lessons on a wide variety of instruments. All the normal orchestral instruments, but also guitar, bass, drums, voice, etc. We really have an amazing faculty. I want to be in a jam band all the more now. It just depends on how many years I'm here and how much effort I put into it. The other day I was walking through past the jazz band room/studio A, and the band in there was playing "Friend of the Devil." I forget who I assume it was, but one of the profs (jazz maybe?) and I think Seth,(great set player) and I forget who else. I've been thinking a lot lately about this summer, which seems too soon to think about, but I have some good options that I can do. I plan on talking to Jimmy Tebeau, either in person when he's at KKID or via mail, about some sort of interning over the summer, or if I could actually get a job, helping set up and I could learn from their sound techs as well as in school. But at Schwag it would be so much better. If that doesn't work out, though, I am in at Ramshackled People. If I had seen people earlier in the summer, I would have been able to work there, but I didn't see Thomas until the day before I left. But we went over there and Paul was recording and Thomas showed me some stuff. But more later.
