Laurel was an honorable hedge

But it's dead now. As in, men with chainsaws and stump grinders came and took it away. We're about halfway through building a new fence now, and I'll post up some pictures when we get around to putting them in. The important part is that the back yard is now fenced again, so Vic can go out there unsupervised. We had a couple of scary moments when he wandered out in the middle of the night (Binx pushed the door open) and we didn't know where he was. He did always turn up again, though.

We're pretty much on schedule to finish up everything next weekend. A little later in the year, we're going to get a raft of plants to put against the fence, including lots of vines to block the view of the neighbor's house. Because of a quirk in Seattle's building code, fences can only be 6' tall, but there can be another 2' of trellis on top. We're taking advantage of that extra view blockage!

One plant we already picked up is a katsura tree. Most of the year, katsuras look like a fairly standard deciduous tree. The great part is in the fall when the leaves start turning color and they get a strong smell of burning sugar. It is a very cool thing to have in the garden. Or at least I think so! :)
