I think most of us have seen this around already; if you do any kind of leadership, social politics, or marketing, you should take a look and give a listen.

Godin's three questions:
1) Who are you upsetting?
2) Who are you connecting?
3) Who are you leading?

Godin's characteristics of leaders:
1) Leaders challenge the status quo (which upsets people)
2) Leaders build a culture (define the ingroup and the cultural rituals themselves)
3) Leaders connect people with one another

He also said this: "People want to be missed." I paraphrase - people want to be noticed and missed when they're not around. I think that correlates fairly well with reputation-based societies like heathenism - after all, cattle die and kinsman die, but the one thing that never dies is the reputation of a life well-lived (Patty paraphrase, there, too)

I need to go chew on this some more. Meanwhile, if you haven't listened to/watched/whatevered the video link to Seth Godin's speech, take 17 1/2 minutes out of your life and do it. I suspect he's creating a movement.
