WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A 14-year-old boy was killed Saturday when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding was broadsided by a snowmobile on frozen Cass Lake in Oakland County, officials said.
The 48-year-old man driving the snowmobile also was injured in the crash, which happened shortly after 5:30 p.m., according to West Bloomfield Township fire Capt. Joe Slawek.
The man was transported to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday night.
Investigators told Local 4 that the teenager was leaving an ATV path on the lake when his four-wheeler crossed into the snowmobile's path.
"In this case, they did recognize that they were approaching each other, but there just wasn't enough time to stop," sheriff's Sgt. Dan Toth said.
"These machines don't stop like an automobile would on pavement."
The man and the teenager, who lived in the same West Bloomfield Township neighborhood near the lake, both were wearing helmets. Neighbors said they both were experienced riders.
"Everybody kind of feels the same thing, heavy-hearted right now," said Tony Tersigni, who lives next door to the boy's family and across the street from the man.
