Went with my brothers, Mara, Jackie and Jamie to Chevrolet Amphitheater last night to see Panic! At The Disco perform. Originally, the venue was supposed to be Club Zoo. However, due to an overwhelming amount of ticket sales, they decided to move it to Chevy to accomodate more people. I'm glad they did. There would have been stampedes of depressed emo kids trying to rush the stage to show the band that they are the biggest Panic! fan with the most amount of sorrow and whining.
I say that to be funny. In all actuality, there weren't that many emo-looking kids, and the ones that were couldn't look that hardcore because their parents were standing behind them with arms crossed, not believing they had to be watching some punks on stage instead of at home beating their wives. There were quite a bit of normal looking teens and drunk, smelly adults. And the show DID sell out. Holy shit. You couldn't move at all. There was a line from the entrance of Chevy back to the rear of Hard Rock in Station Square. It moved quickly and we got to walk past some creepy looking duo that were dressed like dead mimes. Which, come to think of it, a dead mime is better than a live one.
The opening acts were pretty good. The Hush Sound was very impressive. Almost No Doubt (Tragic Kingdom) like with some catchy hooks and non-whiny songs. The Dresden Dolls didn't blow me away, but they didn't make me want to run myself through with a samurai sword like I thought they would. But nothing compared to the show Panic! put on last night.
While performing, there was a gothic circus/burlesque show going on in the background. If you've seen the video for "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies," then you'll understand what I'm talking about. They played everything on the album, and even did 2 covers: "Karma Police" by Radiohead and an exceptional "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins. There was this energy at the show I can't even describe to you. I think they sing and perform even better than what was done in the studio, and the crowd ate up everything they did. I haven't jumped and actually danced at a concert in ages, but I was compelled to last night. I'm super cereal, you guys. I'm also a dork.
I mentioned the opening act The Hush Sound...they will be performing in Pittsburgh again on September 19th (it's a Tuesday) at Club Zoo with Daphne Loves Derby, Copeland, and the headliner Jack's Mannequin...that's right, Jillian. Jack's Mannequin. (It's the Something Corporate frontman's solo project, for those out of the loop.) Tickets aren't on sale yet, but I'll keep you aprised to the status if you're interested.
Oh, and if I can go slightly off topic for a minute, I'd like to say a HUGE kudos to Dubya for veto-ing the stem cell bill. I can't say how much pride and patriotism I have for a country that hates to find cures for major diseases. I mean, we really have to give a round of applause for the man that denied our future generations the chance to make things like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's a thing of the past. Who knows? We may have even found a cure for cancer! Pharmaceutical companies don't want THAT going away anytime soon!
Yay for America and ignorance!
