Locomotives equipped with automatic stokers

Jan 05, 2005 20:37

In the early days of the previous century, mechanical engineers designed automatic stokers to increase the flow of coal into the fires of hungry locomotives, as they got larger, faster, and outstripped the capability of human beings to shovel fuel into the steam engine.

I wish someone would do something like that for my kid. I know, I know, she'll eventually do it all for herself, and then I'll be out of a job.

Of course, steam locomotives really didn't have very varied or nutritious diets. Figuring out what she wants at any given point is also a fun game.

Just a thought for your evening. I'm going night-night like aforementioned child now.
