Xander and Spike strolled casually through the high green grass of the open fields. They
had their spears in hand but really had no interest in hunting. The clan had plenty of meat,
and without the ice and snow to preserve it, they only killed what was needed for the day.
The group had just spent their first night in their new home and it had proven to be
everything Xander remembered from his childhood and more. There were hillsides dotted
with empty caves that just begged for families to move in, and there were countless numbers
of tall hardwood trees to build fires that would cook their food and light their nights. During
the days, no fire was needed. The clan had finally found the land that housed the sun, and
the warmth of her glow welcomed them home.
The number of their people had already increased by three when, as reparation for the death
of the members of the White Clan, Liam gave them three young females for breeding. The
first, Rosie, was older and due to her less-than-attractive facial features, she had not been
claimed by a male of the Wind Clan.
Overlooking her slightly crossed eyes and unfortunately placed mole, Badger saw something
in her that reminded him very much of his beloved Lida and he took Rosie to his side and
his cave with Dawn's approval and blessing.
Violet was next. She was chubby, bubbly and eager for a new life. One look at Andy and
she too stepped up to the challenge. Lastly was Lily. She was Violet's younger sister and
far too young for breeding. When the time was right, she would be given to Puff.
Until that time, and considering that Andy still had some years to put under his belt first,
Violet and Lily were to live with Willow and Penn. Right away, despite their dark hair
and bronze skin, they fit comfortably into this new clan of people. So the girls bundled up
their furs and the few items they called their own and they left with the men of the White
Clan. The very next morning, the Wind Clan broke camp and began their journey to the
east while the White clan, following Xander's directions, went west.
Each day of the last cycle of the moon had seen a marked and drastic improvement in the
land and the weather around them. The wind that blew was warm and fragrant. It was filled
with the promise of the grass and the wild flowers that grew high and sweet. The sun
welcomed them to the new world and bathed them in a glow so intense that it coaxed the
clan from their heaviest outer furs. The men discarded the bundles of wood from their
backs, and the springs flowed freely from the earth with an ample supply of fresh water.
Each valley they entered and each field they crossed elicited murmurs among them that
surely this was the place to stop. Each hill and dale were the best, nothing else could be
better. Then the next sunrise would shine a light on a land that was better still. Several
times the clan had suggested that one spot or another was suitable for their new settlement,
yet on they walked.
Even Spike was beginning to question Xander's wisdom, especially in consideration that
Willow was now so swollen with child that she threatened to drop it on the trail as they
walked. Her legs were puffy and her back ached constantly, yet she held her complaints
and continued to put one foot in front of the other.
Then, just two nights ago as they had come over a small hill and into a flat dale, Xander made
the announcement that they had waited seven long months to hear.
"Build a campfire and scatter your furs to sleep, for tonight you lay your heads down on
your own green earth. This is the place of our people. We are home."
For a moment there was dead silence. The words were so hard to believe. It was what they
had hoped and prayed for, and caution would not allow them to accept that it was real.
Finally Andy scowled and cast the leader a suspicious, sideways glance.
"Is that the truth? You aren't just playing with us are you?"
Xander threw his head back and laughed out loud, something that none of them but Spike
had ever seen him do.
"It is the truth. In the morning, in the light, I will show you the short walk from here to the
wall of many caves where we will live and fill every one of them with our people and fat,
fussy babies and plump, fertile women. There is more food here than we can ever eat. It
runs on four legs and it grows on trees. Even Bleat will find a mate here and settle his own clan."
Upon hearing his name, Bleat opened his mouth and gave a shout of praise that he
was permanently off the menu. Willow sighed with relief. Her hands cupped her huge belly
and she laid her head on Penn's lap as Bleat folded his feet up under himself and claimed his
spot next to her. Quickly, the women built a fire and they all sat while Xander continued.
"And that is not the best part. Just listen."
In confusion, the others fell silent. The fire crackled, the tree frogs chirped and a distant
owl hooted. But then they realized that there was something else. Something unidentifiable
that filled the air with a background noise that they couldn't place. One by one, they turned
to the man who was telling the first memorable campfire story of the new land. Xander grinned.
"Do you hear it? It never stops. It sounds like the wind but that isn't what it is. It roars
its power. It is not far from here. It is the endless lake of salty water and fish that I told
you about. It stretches all the way to the horizon and it spills off the edge of the earth. It is
the place where the sun puts out its fire each night as the moon comes up. When I was here
as a child, my father told me that there are more fish in it than a clan could ever catch, and
some of them are big enough to eat a man."
The others gasped at the images Xander was creating in his story and Puff was
especially intrigued. He had, for some time, itched to make a stain of berries and charcoal
and draw the pictures on a cave wall that would tell the story of their adventure and journey
from the land of ice and snow.
Although it was late, the group was too excited to sleep. They talked long into the rise of
the moon and they asked Xander a dozen different questions. Even Spike was enthralled
as he sat like one of his clansmen listening to his mate weave fantastic tales of what they
would find in this land of milk and honey. Finally, one by one they yawned and collapsed
from total exhaustion and the burnt-out adrenaline of anticipation.
When the sun called to them a short time later, they should have been grumpy and
sleep deprived, yet each and every one of them leapt to their feet and coaxed Xander
to immediately take them the final few steps to the promised land.
He had told the truth. It wasn't far. Falling from formation, they milled about and hurried in
the direction indicated. They had spent the night in a dense forest of massive trees, so large
their arms would not reach around the circumference. With a whoop and a shout, they
ran, leaping over fallen limbs and dodging around the clumped foliage until suddenly, one
by one, they burst from the tree line to stand in a wide open-field where their mouths dropped
in shock.
Directly ahead of them was a huge, flat cliffside that was covered by tall, winding green
vines with blossoms of purple and white flowers that reached clear to the top. Dotted at
several heights of the face of the cliff were more caves than they had ever seen. Some
were huge and some were nothing more than an opening for a mouse to nest.
The area was vast and filled with flocks of birds that sang and chirped as they swooped from
the trees to land on the vines and peck at the ground for the fat, juicy worms that lived
there. The bees buzzed, and small mice and furry creatures darted about their feet.
It was life everywhere they looked. It was all the things they had forgotten that the world
could be. It was a place that had been prepared for them, and now that they had actually
arrived, they couldn't wait to claim it.
By evening, each family unit had selected a place to call their own and they had, as a
group, come to the agreement that although they were inhabiting their own space and caves,
they would still come together for the nightly campfire to keep the fabric of the clan strong.
The clan. They were without question one people, but as Xander and Spike had announced,
they were no longer the White Clan and Xander had severed his attachment to the Wind
Clan. So who were they? That was the discussion of this morning's walk. While the
others fussed and reveled in their new homes, Spike and Xander needed time to themselves.
"I can't believe we are really here. My people can never thank you enough, Xander.
They know...I know that we would have died on the first cycle of the moon if we had tried
to do this alone. You have changed our lives. You have saved our lives."
Xander stopped walking and ran his hands over his mate's bare chest.
"You are my mate, Spike. You are my life."
Spike smiled and stood on his tiptoes to bump his nose with that of his mate, but he still
had concerns that he needed resolved and questions answered.
"You have walked each season of your life. You have brought us here, but are you going to
be content to stay? What happens when the season shifts and the urge grows in you to
again walk? Will your feet itch to move and your discontent grow in the confinement of the
cave and my arms?"
Xander shook his head and he pulled the smaller man into his embrace. He sniffed the
familiar, comforting scent of Spike's neck and hair and he felt the expected stirring in his man-part.
"I walked in search of something that I have found. I have you and I have a home. What
else could I go in search of? I will be content to stay Spike. As long as you are here, I will
stay. We will be the leaders of a strong new clan and we will be the first elders. We will find
a balance of the old ways and the new and our people will rule the earth."
Spike pulled back and he blinked. They had a people and they were a clan but they were a
clan without a name.
"Who are we, Xander? A clan without a name is not a clan. We promised them a fresh start
and a new identity. What is our name?"
Xander dug his fingers into his wild, matted hair and his forehead wrinkled in concentration.
"I been giving that some serious thought. A clan name needs to tell the story of who they are
and where their home is. We have left the land of ice and snow. We journeyed over
the mountains to the place of hills and dales and we located the sun. Now we live here.
In the place of the dales and the sun. I say that we are the clan of the Sun and Dale."
Spike liked that. He tried it out on his tongue and in his mind. He smiled his agreement and
just as he was about to put his stamp of approval on Xander's scathole, Penn came
shouting, rushing through the forest in search of them.
"SPIKE! XANDER!! Hurry! It's Willow. It is her time!"
Without waiting for needless conversation, as soon as Penn was certain they had heard him,
he spun back in the direction he had just come and all three men dashed towards the wall
of caves. In his heart, Spike prayed that the long, arduous journey had not caused the baby
any damage. He ran as fast and as hard as his legs would carry him, and as they cleared the
field he passed Penn and was the first to leap into the mouth of the cave that was Willow
and Penn's home.
Spike gasped for breath and he bent over at the waist as the sharp pain of the run stabbed him
in the side. Coy and the other men were wringing their hands and fretting around a small,
smoky fire as they awaited the drama that was playing out in the far end of the cavern.
"Were is...? What's happening? How is she?"
Before anyone could answer Spike's barrage of questions, the loud, echoing cry of a
baby bounced off the stone walls and filled the cave with a bright new future. Penn, Spike
and Xander all charged back and skidded to a stop just as Dawn was covering Willow and
the squirming infant in the soft, supple furs. With a tired, proud grin, Willow looked up.
Tears glistened in her eyes as she ran her palm over the baby's head, quieting it.
"It's a boy. A man child. I'm naming him Adam."
Spike revently took the child from her arms and he walked to the mouth of the cave. There,
he lifted the boy toward the warmth of the sun and he declared him.
"This child is the first. He is Adam and he will one day rule the clan of the Sun and Dale. As
a man, he will be the owner of the earth."
The others of the clan took a deep breath and for the first time in as long as they could
remember, they felt safe. They had a home, a past and finally, a future.
