When you're a professional who works A LOT, you spend too much of your limited free time losing yourself in worlds that bear little resemblance to your own. Or at least I do. As a result, I've been watching a ton of great stuff lately. Here is a brief list:
- I binged the 3 seasons of See back-to-back, and oh my gawd, I wasn't expecting Jason Momoa to be that impressive. We quite literally signed onto Apple tv to see something else exclusively, but then got roped into this and I fell in love with the world and the characters in it.
- My husband bought me the 3 seasons of Hannibal (again, on Apple tv) so I could watch it whenever I liked. Then we rewatched it together and it's still fresh and excessively baroque even 10 years after it ended *hearteyes*.
- HBO's documentary Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York was fucking a-maz-ing. I don't think I've ever watched a crime doc that went into so much detail into crime victims lives before. Every minute was fascinating. I also got obsessed with a song used for the end credits of episode 1, and spent a month hunting it down (it's "Safe" by Debby Friday btw).
- Ghosted with Ana De Armas and Chris Evans was big, silly fun and a definite rec if you want a no-think action film to lull your stress away for an evening (frankly, I'll watch Ana in anything).
- The Crowded Room on Apple tv was also shockingly good. Sadly, I knew the twist from episode 1 since the opening credits referenced a book I had read, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. Tom Holland acted his ass off and I really wasn't expecting that. It was also very cool that the whole series was written almost exclusively by Akiva Goldsman, so the narrative flow was very smooth. That being said, there were some reductive stylistic choices made that came off as a bit hokey to me (can't be more specific without spoilers), but the overall effect was very satisfying.
- The husband and I spent 2 months watching all 6 seasons of Vikings, and boy, was that a wild ride. Again, another show written exclusively by one person, so very consistent in terms of tone and story. The world is very immersive and the characters really stick to you, even the bad ones.
- I also finally watched Succession (because everyone else did). While I can't say I enjoyed it (too much relentless conflict to be an 'enjoyable' experience), I will say it was addictive. I'm also completely satisfied with how it ended and that IT IS OVER. I couldn't handle another season, quite frankly.
