Duck Report: Fall Edition

In which fall has arrived with birds and puppies and new tasks to take on.

Duck Report 57 22nd September 2021

Yesterday I went downtown to buy a new dog cage. Poor old Roxie Rocket Ship has had to hang out in an old small carry case which she can barely turn around in, so I thought I would buy her a new one. The kids (blythe note: read "puppies") have the two large cages and Harley has the small cage. I found a nice black one with a front door which was the appropriate size. In the evening when everyone had to go to bed Harley was first in and went to the new cage and installed himself and was not coming out. So, Rox had to take the old one but at least she can now sprawl out. Harley was much pleased with the new arrangement. He said it’s new and black like him, and just the right size for a dog to lounge in.

It has now been raining for two days. Yesterday we had 3 inches and it still has not stopped. We can’t complain as before this we had a week of glorious sunny weather. But the effect of this has produced lovely fairy rings of toadstools in the lawn, unfortunately they are not edible and do not produce any significant dye.

This weather has also brought flocks of small birds who are heading south for the winter. I think they are mostly starlings, blackbirds and grackles, so not very interesting, but lovely to hear chirping away in the trees.

Duck Report 58 6th October 2021

I just discovered a new sparrow in the migrating birds. It is a white crowned sparrow and apparently it is heading for New Jersey. We have clouds of them but I guess they will move on soon.

I have just been spinning Rupert, who is the Shetland (blythe note: she means spinning his wool, not the sheep. Imagine poor Rupert whizzing around...). I am spinning in the raw which I personally really like. My hands get dirty, smelly and greasy. I love the smell and the lanolin makes my hands lovely and soft. Rupert is a flexible guy and so it seems is his fleece. I find I can spin from either tip or cut end with no difficulty.

The puppies went for their first walk this week and just loved exploring.
