As if last week wasn't bad enough, Leonard Cohen passed beyond the veil last Friday. Montreal (and all of Canada, really) is in mourning.
I was never fond of Cohen as a singer (he didn't sing so much as chanted) or a performer, but there is absolutely no question that he was a brilliant lyricist and compelling storyteller. Erudite, complex, subtle, a dyed-in-the-wool romantic, and an unabashed lover of 'sad songs' Cohen was part of a unique generation of performers and artists that hasn't translated into subsequent generations for whatever reason. What a shame. Such a necessary mind, such beautiful, touching frailty... Thank you for the time you gave us, Mr. Cohen. Rest well.
