In news that I didn't think would ever happen:
Former Detroit Red Wings Head Coach (and epic scowler), Mike Babcock, has just signed an 8-year deal to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs!
If you're not into hockey, this doesn't mean much, but this is HUGE. Toronto wasn't considered to be legitimately in the running to hire him, and, well, we haven't won a Stanley Cup in 48 years. Who would want to come here and tilt at that windmill, right? Babcock has coached the Canadian Olympic team to gold, he's coached the World Junior team to gold, and has won the Stanley Cup. He's coached teams to Playoff runs in 11 of his last 12 seasons. He's like the Second Bloody Coming in professional hockey, and now he's taking on the Toronto - all the pundits said that he'd choose a city with a probability of a Playoff run like San Jose or St. Louis... not the Loser Leafs.
I'm delighted. I squealed at work. It's gonna take a few years to get the team to a place of realistic contention, but if anyone can do it, it's Mike. And if we win the Cup under his watch, we'll probably rename the city after him. THAT'S how much it would mean to Toronto.
