Favorite Movies
(I actually had a really a really hard time coming up with ten that I loved above all others, and some are flawed and a bit messy, but liked anyway and are better than a lot other that I watched, so..., here's my list of mostly loved movies in no particular order.)
- Sense and Sensibility (miniseries, 2008)
- Midnight in Paris (2011)
- The Avengers (2012)
- Pitch Perfect (2012)
- Sherlock: The Hounds of Baskerville (2012, really more of a TV show, but practically a movie in length)
- Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
- Skyfall (2012)
- Jake, Who Lives at Home (2011)
- The Hunger Games (2012)
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie
Easily, The Avengers, because I adore Loki, but also so many other things about the characters and the action and the awesomeness in general. Though I also loved the comedy and heart in Paul, which was great for very different reasons.
Best Horror Movie
A tough one, but I'm partial to fairy tales, so I'll go with Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2012), despite it's flaws. Although, I also really liked the skill it took to make the one-take Silent House, as well as the teenage angst metaphor of Ginger Snaps.
Best Animated Movie
While I thoroughly enjoyed both Brave and The Secret Life of Arietty, I didn't love them as much as I thought I would. They are both great movies and are certainly the best of what I've seen this year, but I'm not raving about them.
Best Comedy
Pitch Perfect. I adored it. Loved the quirky cast of girl characters and the acapella singing of popular songs. Rebel Wilson is fast becoming a favorite of mine. Such a fun movie.
Best Romantic Movie
Sense and Sensibility was such a great take on an Austin novel. I loved this miniseries and it stands out in terms of romance.
Best Documentary
Hubble is a short length IMAX documentary about the Hubble telescope and the repair requirements to keep it alive a little longer. I love space travel and science, and the filming of distant nebulae and stars is stunning.
Best Foreign Film
I think I'll go with La belle endormie / The Sleeping Beauty (2010), because even though my sister found it incomprehensible and pretty much hated it, I was fascinated, even if I didn't fully understand it. Also, I rather like how Catherine Breillat treats fairy tales in an almost literal manner. Events happen and she doesn't feel the need to explain how or why, just as how fairy tales or told. If a witch turns into a toad, we don't need to know how she turns into a toad, it's just enough that she does.
Least Favorite Movies
(I watched A LOT of rather crappy movies this year, so this list was easier by far, but I'll be lenient and narrow it down to five.)
- Doom (2005)
- The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)
- Sex Drive (2008)
- The Touch (2002)
- A Troll in Central Park (1994)
