why I dislike U.S. adaptations of foreign movies

So, I've seen the trailer for the U.S. version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and while I love Daniel Craig (who's playing Mikael Blomkvist), I am so not stoked.

Keep in mind that I have not read the books. I've only seen the Swedish versions of the movie and I'm basing my judgments off that. The Swedish Dragon Tattoo was by no means a perfect ( Read more... )

I agree! I haven't read the books or seen the original films (yet, I very much want to), but visually, Noomi Rapace looks incredible and I already find myself comparing Mara to her unfavourably. I'm not a fan of Hollywood remakes anyway, but this one strikes me as too soon after the originals, which I understand have been very well-received).

It is very soon, but not surprising considering how popular both the books and Swedish movies are and how much money Hollywood will probably make even if it is terrible.

My sister is always surprised when I tell her I haven't read the books yet. She's like, "But, but, you read so much! You read everything!"

To which I have to gently explain that no, I don't read everything, because if I did I would have to forgo sleep and eating and everything else and then would be dead.

Lol, yes, I also have relatives who express amazement if I haven't read something. My mum sometimes makes me read books so I can explain them to her afterwards.

Totally agree! I did read the books before I saw the movies, and of course the books were better because they portray Lisbeth as both deeply wounded, but also very strong. At least...the first book did. Then by book 2, the idiot author decided that Lisbeth needed a boob job and long hair to turn her into every other Lara Croft-style heroine in the world.

I don't particularly like Daniel Craig, and I don't think I'm going to waste any time watching the American version of the movie. I like subtitles, and I like knowing that the Swedish word for "hard disk" is "hard disk."

Yeah, I'm not going to mess with the American version either. Boo to that.

Me, too! That's just one of the things that makes foreign films awesome.
