Racialicious has an interesting entry on "Stuff White People Do: Pose In Cowboy Drag," which is about the myth of the cowboy and how politicians use it to appeal to conservative white voters. A fair percentage of real cowboys from wild west history were actual black or Latin American, and worked as laborers. It's easy to forget that while watching old western films, and something I need to remember if I ever get around to writing the Calamity Jane story I keep wanting to write.

Malinda Lo has a great series of articles discussing how to avoid LGBTQ stereotypes in YA fiction, though it offers good general guidelines for any kind of writing. Topics covered include: major LGBTQ stereotypes, gender, words to watch out for, secondary characters and gay jokes, and resources.

So often Victorians are seen as being so serious and stoic with their photos always features unsmiling, straight faces, so I was delighted to see this set of photos of Victorians smiling, enjoying themselves, and all in all being slightly silly.

And finally,yuki_onna has a dead-on post on twist endings, in which she explains why people might be attracted to the twist ending, and why, ultimately, it's unsatisfying. As she says, "Here's the thing about The Ending. It's a fucking cheat. It's like Lucy yanking that stupid football away over and over again and laughing demoniacally every single time." Yes, exactly.
