Writing Update: Cassandra

Jul 20, 2009 20:52

Project: "Cassandra" (short story)
New Words: 777
Current Total Word Count: 5,547 (Though many of these are notes and stilted attempts.)
Goal: To get to the end.

Random Sentence: My son has a habit of watching skies, gaging the color of blue, measuring the weight of clouds, watching for storms that may or may not come. I always liked watching him watching the world.

Notes: Up until this point, I've been writing this story with the main character mostly passive. At the end of the life she is settled in her life and accepting of its pains. But in the course of writing these paragraphs, a thought occurred to me which takes the story in a completely different direction. This will require that I pretty much start from the beginning and rewrite the whole darn thing.

This is both frustrating and exciting. Frustrating both because I don't know how to pull this new version off yet and because I had thought I was nearing the end of a first draft (my muse is rolling on the floor in hysterics right now). But it is also exciting, because my story has new life, and while I thought my old version had potential to be a good story, this new version has the potential to (I hope) be a great one.

I don't feel as though all my previous writing had been a waste, rather, it brought me to this point, and I can use much of the already existing imagery and characterization (I'm starting to like my narrator's tone) to bring this new version to life. *fingers crossed*

*As a side note: This will be the third or so incarnation of "Cassandra" which started life as a poem, but didn't function as such (I went through multiple rewrites trying to make it work), so I've been working to fashion it into a story.
