Orson Scott Card writes a newspaper column known as “Civilization Watch,” in a newspaper called, “The Ornery American.” He is known , and flamed as a bigot, racist, sexist pig, and generally, an unpleasant person to be around. In addition to those austere titles, he is hailed as a genius, who has the courage to take radical stands on controversial issues, without reservation or apology. These every so slightly contrasting views depend entirely on which side of the argument you end up on. Proponents of gay marriage hate him, pro-lifers love him, and so on and so forth. He is a man of contradictions, as is exhibited through his best known, and perhaps most controversial work, Ender’s Game. The book itself focuses around children murdering other children, and the genocide of a sentient species, which starkly contrasts his view on life and death, as he states in his article, “Whose Life Is Worth Living?” In this column, Card argues vehemently that no person should have the ability to decide whose life is worth living, and who should die, citing the case of Terry Schavio as a brutal violation of the most base principles of humanity.
