Whew, finished! It's amazing (though probably not surprising to anyone who knows me) that I managed to spend so much time, stress, and energy on a 1000 word essay that was OPTIONAL! Oh well. I'm finished and I feel pretty decent about it. It helped that it was on a subject I felt strongly about. Very simply put: the problems with U.S. schools. To be more specific, it was a reflection of my own experiences in an educational system as viewed through a capabilities lens (that was the assignment). I kind of took off with that in order to point out the lack of comprehensive education in both the public and alternative U.S. schools. Frankly, given more time and word allotment, I would have like to expand the essay, go into more depth.
Anyway, despite being tired from staying up until 2AM to finish the darned thing, I had a good day in classes. We covered the debate on education rights and had a seminar around educational, political, and health issues in Africa. My mind is full for the day, satisfied, but full.
The rest of the week has been kind of stressful (balancing school and work without a bike - grrr), but not too bad. Work continues to be easy and pleasant enough (lots of little old English ladies buying cards and lavender).
I did one unusual thing this week: I went to a clothing store sales event. Standing in long lines for the overflowing dressing rooms, I wondered if I was still me (sort of). It was weird. Most of the people around me were the sorts who never leave the house without first putting on make-up and, as a result, I felt a little awkward and out of place. Actually, I ended up getting most of my purchases from the guy's section. Got some trousers (pants mean underwear over here) for work and some vests (read tank-tops). Got some other stuff too, but have reconsidered and am taking those back tomorrow. I sort of miss the good used clothing stores in Bellingham and Seattle. They mostly just have charity shops here (mini versions of Goodwill).
Enough about shopping.
They has a faux documentary on BBC last night about the assassination of Bush. I only caught a few minutes because of my essay, but it looked pretty convincing (sort of a War of the Worlds thing without people believing it's real) and interesting.
Anyway, I'm fading, so I think I'm going to head home for dinner. Next post soon I hope. (:
