I was in Quitman at Mama's at night when a good storm rolled through. I love good storms, and Quitman is much darker at night than my house as there is only one street light near Mama's and that's covered fairly well by trees. So I went outside to watch it.
The storm seemed to have gone by more or less. It wasn't raining but I could still hear water falling from the roof and dripping from the trees. I suddenly realized what I wanted to do, fought myself on it since, ya know, it seemed weird, then decided to do it anyway. I went out on the pavement of the drive way and layed down on my back and just stared up.
There was a thick cloud cover, but I knew the moon was bright behind it somewhere as it wasn't a completely black sky. Still, staring up into seeming nothingness caused my eyes to lose focus. Occasionally lightning from different directions would accentuate the contours of the clouds rolling over me, and sometimes it flashed nearby and my vision would go white and then take a moment to adjust to the darkness again. Thunder lazily boomed and echoed off somewhere. After some time I could hear rustling in the trees off in the distance. It steadily got closer and I knew that the storm was coming back around. The wind finally got to me and swirled all around, the lightning more frequent and the thunder louder all while I just laid there and stared into nothing.
It was a very unusual "out of body" feeling. I felt separated from myself, like I was nobody or I wasn't a person. There was no concern or care, just the experience of the sensations around me. Like I could just be swept away and be rid of all...this. Strange, peaceful in some small way.
The rain finally started again and my body shivering brought me back.
Was strange.
