His love was for Janan, and she knew that.

But it never stopped Asma from touching Haytham's arm, asking him without words - stay with me. I need you to stay with me.

He would leave eventually, she knew - everyone did. But if she touched his arm in that way, and looked up at him in a certain fashion... If she could coax up the tears that so reluctantly sprang to her eyes...

She could have him a while longer. She could be enveloped in his warmth, reassuring and safe, and she could pretend for a few moments that it was her that would be in his bed that night. She could feel his arms around her a while longer, feel the way his hands ran over her shoulders when he knew she was cold.

He did the same to Janan, and Asma knew that, having seen him care for the other woman so tenderly when the clouds covered the sun and the white snow fell down on them. When they sat together in the courtyard, silvery flakes dancing along their faces, it was difficult to tell from behind what was snow and what was Roc. But their eyes were blue and brilliant, and Asma always saw their figures through the curtain of snow.

She could never take Janan's place, and she knew that, but if she couldn't be Haytham's wife, then perhaps she could get by as his vice.
