The first draft of my thesis proposal is complete and I'm anticipating at least one or two revisions over the next few days. The only parameters of the proposal are a title, descriptions of the intended work, the methods to achieve such, the relevance of this work to my development and one page in length. At the moment, I feel like the proposal sounds like a book report, yet, the parameters make it feel as though the proposal (in this scenario) is a bit informal in nature. Nevertheless, it's honest, I'm excited about putting the rest of this work together and I have less than a year to complete it at this point.
The intended title for my thesis study is Unveiled Pandemonium. The body of work created over the course of this year will explore self-degradation prompted by the encumbrance of societal definitions of feminine gender roles through the creation of several monumental female characters. The work will be carried out through a variety of mediums including graphite, digital images and large-scale projections of images within the gallery setting.
An outline of the work to be carried out is as follows, seven to nine graphite works carried out in multiple formats:
• Figure situated within a minimally developed interior to invoke a feeling of constraint upon the character
• Figure within an undeveloped space-a denial of environment
• Trace drawings (similar to carbon copy transfers) that illustrate the external development of an internal reality.
Three to five digital works which:
• Reinforce the concepts of the graphite work in color
• Explore the concepts of the graphite work on an intimate scale
• Create a sense of viewer accessibility to private scenarios.
A projection of images which:
• Juxtapose large-scaled work next to more intimately-scaled digital renderings
• Emphasize the ephemeral quality of the graphite work by projecting the drawings
• Allow viewers to move and pass through projections, reinforcing a sense of violence as they destroy the projected display and deny the female monument an environment.
The pursuit of this work is relevant to the shaping of my artistic voice. I am exploring personal concerns and social dilemmas that women face, how society has shaped me as a woman and how I fit into my role as both a woman and a professional. All of these factors influence the statements I project to viewers through my art. Understanding how and why these factors affect what visually intrigues me is crucial to further personal artistic investigations. This work ultimately becomes the first step in re-shaping the perception I have of myself as a woman, a professional and an artist.
