My brother thought he had wings....

A short story by M.J. Bentley

My brother thought he had wings. My parents had hospitalized him for it. They thought he'd lost his mind, or at best was delusional.
He was now out and 'normal' in my parents eyes, hiding his dreams of flight and wings under his bed.
I shouted at my brother not to jump while running towards where he stood on the ledge of the high rise where we lived. He turned to me and simply smiled. I grabbed at him and he dropped off the edge. As I watched him fall it looked like he fell in slow motion, the echoing sound of my own voice seemed to carry him to the ground. Even from up here I could hear the sickening thud, I turned and slumped down on the edge.

My brother thought he had wings... I felt the feathers between my fingers, he was right...

And I could feel mine rising up from my back, like teeth pushing through the gums..... Was I ill, was I insane? I would have to wait and find out for sure. I let the feathers go and watched them blow away in the breeze and hoped my sanity did not go with them.
