Had a pretty good day today, at the Million Paws Walk (we were against the RSPCA, mind you), apart from getting a little privately upset a few times being reminded of my Lili. The great thing about being at an event like this was that the people there were already animal lovers of one sort or another, as opposed to the type of person who walks out ( Read more... )

<3 ALV. You guys got me out of a 'find a news story in the CBD' prac today. I just went.. 394 Russell St is kinda CBD. Protest on weekend. people in lettuce leaf outfits. breaking the news on the rspca. So then went for coffee and lunch, and constructed a prac sheet. Got back, checked details on the web, and there's something about getting a spread in the Age today? There's one picture, of two dogs and albert park lake, and no mention of the protest whatsover. But it's cute that they claimed that, and if I can get you guys some coverage in the RMIT student rag soon to be available throughout the CBD, I'll rectify the lack of coverage thingie for you.
Still, all coverage is good coverage, right? Even if the coverage, in fact, completely ignores your presence.. ?

Yeah, the Herald Sun totally ignored us too, but I couldn't care less. Everyone I spoke to there with there dog was shocked at the things the RSPCA has done and totally agreed with us, so if we've changed something about their attitude to that most hypocritical of associations, then I think I may be able to deal with being ignored by the Herald Sun.
However, being in your newpaper shall be exciting.

No, just thought it was odd because checked the releases/news on the alv website, and they said they got age coverage, so i was all 'woot! non dodgy media-ness', then it was all a lie... damn you, alv pr people.

would you expect more from animal lib? now seriously.

You don't know very much about animal lib, so really, don't judge them. They don't publish propoganda. They write opinionated articles, certainly, but don't compare it to, say, the social alternative newpaper that considers "white fascist pigs" to be journalism. Animal lib lets the evidence they collect speak for itself.

"They don't publish propoganda."

prop·a·gan·da Audio pronunciation of "propaganda" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prp-gnd)
n.

1. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.

You want to take back your statement?

If you believe they don't spout propaganda - like every single other pressure group - I dont think you know what propaganda is.

No, I don't. I don't consider any pushing of views to be propaganda. I consider things to be propaganda when they they spout unsupported fluff. A very nice, clear definition there, but as you said, late. And I can see everything turning into a nasty debate, so I'm just going to bed.

You misunderstand the english language. Goodnight.

Nein, I read the connotations and therefore have a complex understanding. Night.

You read your assumed connotations that society has imposed, instead of reading the words.

Common usage is what essentially shapes the language, not a dictionary.

Ack. Stepping in on that one. A words meaning can only come from the meaing that we give it- there's no innate dictionary. Therefore, propaganda's use in essentially a negative sense, implying a bombardment of persuasive rather than factual material, means that those connotations become a part of the meaning. Dictionaries are good starting points, but not always right.

Although i did find it slightly odd that ALV implied the protest received coverage in a city daily when the actual protest did not, I wouldn't call it propaganda. Could have been overly optimistic of them- they might've been told it was going in and It got cut by a sub for space or something.
