(The video is mysteriously flipped I dunno why)

Uh huh.

It's funny that a FF trailer gets that reaction from me, but I honestly don't know what to make of this. Of course I realize that Square Enix games are a big deal but this game seems to be trying WAY too hard to be Dark And Serious Business. The shooty guns and gore and fancy cars just make it seem like every other grungy urban game out there right now rather than an epic story.

Also, Square, obvious flashy product placement is just fucking pathetic and wrecks SERIOUS havoc on the fourth wall. Don't break gameplay immersion just for some bucks, I'm sure you have enough.

And really ... I don't want to seem like a purist, but Final Fantasy is a FANTASY not a sci-fi, and yes there is a difference between the two. Other games had sci-fi elements but they were still grounded in a fantastical world (FF13 was sci-fi but the fancy cities were still inside a floating orb powered by demigods). This doesn't seem to have any real fantasy at all; no fancy buildings, no odd world-building quirks, no bizarre landscapes. It's so ridiculously URBAN. And, frankly, I don't play multi-hour fantasy escape games to see more urban skyline.

Not to mention that there seems to be a romantic subplot. Worse, a Romeo & Juliet romantic subplot. It's not that I hate all romance, honest, it's just I've very rarely seen one that is a) convincing, b) done well, and c) make me get fluffy inside. The previous FF attempts where FF8, FF10 and FF9 ... and only one of those games had one that WASN'T absolutely horrible and gag-inducing. So not much faith there.

Plus, R&J types of romance are even harder to get right, mostly because many romance writers loathe the idea of conflict and anything less than shiney puppies in their great love story. You can't have the characters on two legitimate opposing sides, because that requires good writing to find a resolution between them. You can't have them resent or dislike each other for their actions, because OMG THE WUV. You can't have them honestly believe in their cause, because they must get together SOMEHOW. In 99% of these stories, one (or rarely, both) realizes they were wrong and abandons their cause to join the other wholeheartedly. In which case I throw the controller at the screen because hello there, missed plot of potential awesome.

So yeah. It's just a trailer but this is making me really kinda hesitant.
