Ficlets...

Jun 25, 2012 22:23

As you can probably guess, my week got unexpectedly busy, and then I signed a contract for a new flat so I'm moving. Hence, it's entirely possible I won't end up writing to all of your getting together prompts, my apologies.

However, here are three that I did manage...

Kono/Sam

Kono knows all the places that the surfers - the ones who are good, like her, could have made it on the pro circuit, or did - go to surf, and some mornings, she finds her way there as well, losing herself in the crowds and the familiar faces.

Some mornings, though, she wants - well, to be alone sounds too much like one of her teenaged cousins - to be somewhere else. Somewhere peaceful and quiet, where the waves might not be so great, and she's the best surfer on them by a mile. She loves to lose herself in the rhythm of the waves and her board, but sometimes she needs to not quite sink so deep into it - to keep her thoughts about her.

It's not unusual for there to be other people on the beach - swimmers, runners, people walking dogs or entertaining kids too small to understand that five am is sleepy time. They're all there to do something though, so when she spots a woman sitting alone on the beach, it sticks in her brain.

Enough so that, when she's making her way out of the water, she checks again for the woman, finds her sitting in the same place as before. It's a little difficult to tell without staring, but she thinks the woman is watching her, and even if she isn't, Kono's always up for meeting another early morning beach denizen.

"Aloha," she calls when she's close enough, and she was right, the woman was watching her, because she doesn't startle at all, just raises a hand in greeting.

"Aloha," she echoes, her accent marking her as a non-native. She's older than Kono, blonde hair pulled back from her face, and she looks tired. Or maybe that's just the way she's wrapped in a hoodie, though it's not really cool enough any more. "You looked good out there."

"Thanks." Kono scrubs her towel over her hair, and when she lowers it, the woman's watching her with more than just friendly interest. Interesting. It's been three months since she and Adam broke it off - turns out really good sex actually isn't enough to sustain a relationship, unfortunately - and while Kono will never be hard up for dates, she has to be a little more careful with women, working at Five-0. "Kono Kalakaua," she offers, along with her hand.

The woman takes it without standing up. "Sam Carter." Her handshake is firm and accompanied by a really nice smile.

"Good to meet you," Kono says.

John/Ronon/Teyla

They go back to Pegasus with many more conditions on their return than ever before, and without Rodney. The two factors combined seem to spell the end of the team. John acquires far too many marines for either him or Lorne to justify going off-world regularly, which somehow leads to Ronon joining Lorne's team in the resulting reshuffle. Woolsey, meanwhile, acquires a small diplomatic contingent, to which Teyla applies and is accepted, and that's the end of John's team as a team.

"You ever think about moving to the mainland?" John asks Teyla one evening, the three of them sprawled across the floor of her room after movie night, Torren asleep on Ronon's chest.

"Occasionally," Teyla allows. "It would be simpler for Torren to see his father."

"You having trouble getting a ride over?"

Teyla shakes her head. "Not at all, your pilots are very generous with their time."

"Because if they're ever not, you know - I can get Ronon to beat them up for you."

"You getting too old for it?" Ronon asks, his grin spelling out challenge in three foot high letters.

"To take on the marines?" If he's honest, he probably is, but this is one of many areas where John's comfortable not being honest. "Never."

"Sounds like it."

"Want me to prove it?" John asks. "I'll take you right now."

"Torren is sleeping," Teyla protests, but she's laughing, reaching for her son.

"He'd sleep through an armed invasion," John says. He leans over to stroke a hand over Torren's baby soft hair. Ronon's still got one hand on Torren's back, steadying him as Teyla takes him, and the three adults are close enough to touch.

Close enough to kiss.

The thought hits John out of nowhere - or, maybe not quite nowhere, when he's jerked off to Ronon pinning him to the workout mats, to fantasies of Teyla pushing his head under the light work-out skirt she wears. It's always been a fantasy, a dream to pull out on good days because it's not safe for bad days, not something he ever even thought of talking about - asking for.

Except, here they are, the three of them and baby Torren, Rodney back on Earth, no longer team but still held close together like the best days of their team.

"John," Teyla says softly.

When John looks at her she's watching him with a look that's half-familiar, half-startlingly new, and reflected on Ronon's face.

Not for the first time, he thinks he's probably the last of them to catch on, but it hardly matters now. And anyway, he always gets there in the end.

Sam/Jennifer

When Jennifer gets asked, two months into what is looking like at least a year of Atlantis on Earth, to take over as temporary CMO on the Hammond, she says yes without a second thought and hurries over to Rodney's apartment for as much we're-going-to-be-apart-for-a-while sex as she can have before leaving.

Or at least, that's her plan. What actually happens is that Rodney accuses her of abandoning Atlantis and not wanting to go back to Pegasus, she shouts back that he's the one talking about buying a house not her, and the whole thing spirals down into her yelling that they're through as she slams the door behind herself.

She expects to regret it and go back to him with an apology, or for him to come after her. Instead, all she feels is relief, and the email she sends him, two days later when she's due to beam onto the ship, is the calm, adult break-up she wishes she'd done in the first place.

The Hammond is nothing like Atlantis, and exactly like it at the same time. The med team welcome her, induct her into the ways of life on the ship and what they do when it's quiet. It doesn't feel like home, exactly, but Jennifer feels at home there anyway.

Especially when Colonel Carter sits down opposite her in the mess, smiling and offering to share a chocolate brownie.

"We're glad to have you on board," she says.

"Glad to be here." Jennifer ducks her head - she was a little in awe of Colonel Carter in Atlantis, a little in awe and a lot in lust, and it hasn't really gone away with a year's distance and her relationship with Rodney. "I don’t think I ever got chance to say congratulations on getting your own ship."

Carter glows with the comment, looking around her the same way Sheppard sometimes looks at Atlantis. "Pretty good consolation prize for losing Atlantis."

Jennifer makes a face, can't help herself - she likes Woolsey all right, but she's heard how Carter got relieved of her command and it sucks. "We miss you," she says, then, feeling brave, "I miss you."

Carter's smile changes into something softer, but underlined with the kind of interest Jennifer remembers in the way Ronon looked at her for a while. "Really?" she asks, voice low.

Jennifer's very glad the mess is deserted, just the two of them tucked in a corner. She really wants to say something smooth and sexy, but there's a reason she needed bar tricks to pick people up. "One of your officers gave me the guided tour earlier," she says instead. "But I'm not sure I remember all of it."

Carter cocks an eyebrow, looking like she wants to laugh. It makes something in Jennifer relax, and she giggles slightly, bites her lip to make herself stop. "I'd be happy to help," Carter says, mock-serious. "Is there anywhere in particular you're looking for?"

"My quarters," Jennifer says, a little too loud in her sudden confidence.

Carter's hand covers her for a moment. "I'd be more than happy to show you," she says.
