So Chris is still job hunting. He has been to a million interviews and we think he has a good lead. The position doesn't officially open up until August, but he still has to get licensed as an intern and that can take about 6 weeks. He will be able to get supervision for real licensure, plus benefits. So it looks good, but nothing definite.
Our lease is up in November. Last time I was looking for a job, it took 6 months so I figured I better get started. Last week I applied for 5 positions and within 3 days, I heard from 4 of them and got 2 interviews next week! I did 2 phone interviews last week.
- First position is PM&R - physical medicine and rehabilitation. It's in a nursing home/rehabilitation facility and a fairly new specialty. It bridges the "gap" between rehab and clinical medicine. I don't really want that job. The pay is good, but no vacation, and I don't actually get to make decisions. I make recommendations. Boo.
- 2nd is with a Ortho Neuro Surgeon in Lakeway, which is in the Hill Country west of Austin = fancytown. The Dr works on spinal deformities, and his PA that is leaving has been with him for 5 years. The pay STARTS at $10,000 more a year, +insurance, +time off, +$5K relocation, +bonuses. I had a phone interview Friday, and have a casual interview with practice manager on Tuesday and perhaps meeting with the doctor on Thursday.
- 3rd is with another Orthopaedic Spine/Sports medicine facility in Austin. 4 doctors, a larger facility and more than just Spines. I have experience with joint replacements so at least I would know that part. Don't know the details yet. Interview on Thursday.
- 4th is at a pediatric ICU, just an email and they decided I was not qualified enough. I tend to agree.
I was not expecting to get calls this fast. If I get offered something, I will need a pretty big change in my contract from what I already have. Dr J has been good to me, and I like the staff. He told me 2 months ago he was going to start insurance benefits. He told me I was gonna get a raise with the next paycheck. But we want to move south and I want to get back into the OR. If Chris gets this job, he would have to drive an hour and a half both ways. Probably be cheaper to just rent a hotel. Either way, this is exciting!
job,
chris
