So I wrote a letter to CBS.

In regards to this weeks upcoming episode of Judging Amy: Before airing a show to the general public, I highly suggest writers have their facts straight. I am Straight Edge and I find that this new episode is a spit in the face to me and all members of the Straight Edge community. The information being presented is completely wrong. We are good kids that have chosen to go against the drug and alcohol addicted society in which we live. By airing this show, you are giving mainstream Americans an opportunity to wrongly stereotype an entire community. 1) The straight edge lifestyle is based on the principles of staying substance and addiction free. And in this society that in itself is very difficult to do. 2) Even though some Straight Edge kids may take part in things such as cutting, running away, suicide and violence it does not mean that ALL Straight Edge kids take part in those activities. Children take part in those activities no matter what group they are involved in. Unfortunately due to the content of this episode the public will not know that and they will assume that all Straight Edge kids are part of some "cult." By airing this CBS is making a blasphemy of an entire community, as well as a much respected lifestyle. 3) Straight Edge is all about sticking to your convictions and standing up for what you believe in. In the Straight Edge community one does not just “break Edge” in order to get out of a predicament. By doing that you would be throwing all of your beliefs out the window.

I believe that CBS and shows such as Judging Amy have a responsibility to our society to present current issues accurately, truthfully, and in context. “Straight Edge is a more philosophical offshoot of the punk movement, a reaction to the hedonism and self-destruction that characterized punk. The basic tenet of the philosophy centers around the issue of self-control. The goal is to regain as much personal control over your own life as possible. Straight Edge is the only youth counter-culture to actively discourage drug use, alcohol use, and casual sex. Straight edge is a lifestyle centered around personal development and well being, while encouraging fun and togetherness. Straight Edge is not just about being into contemporary punk music acts and being against drugs. It goes deeper than this. The movement wishes to attract people away from dependency lifestyles centered around drug habits (legal or illegal) and unhealthy and exploitative eating and general living habits common in modern cultures. Straight Edge is not dogmatic, there are no hard rules, those are for you to decide. Nobody should dictate like the police, or preach an ideology like the church or state.” -Compliments of http://www.toefur.com/straightedge/faq/
I cannot express my disappointment in CBS enough.
