Nothing's too serious to joke about. When people get too serious to joke about shit, that's when they start feeling bad. If you can joke about anything, then you're pretty much set for a position where you can either be a stand up comedian or else just be happy with yourself. This is not to say there are no times when one should be serious, but you gotta be able to laugh at this fucked up world.
The thing about race and gay jokes is that you have to realize how stupid making fun of someone for being a different race or of a different sexual preference/gender identity than you is before it's actually funny.
