Well

That was an interesting holiday weekend. Rebuilding my computer was not precisely what I had planned. First, we went to replace the power supply thinking I might just have a bad one and it being the cheapest and easiest component to really work with. Then, once it was installed, I was still having trouble, so we pulled it open again and discovered the heat sink was loose.

Went out the next morning to get thermal paste and remount it, but when we went to remount it, discovered that it was, in fact, broken in three places (the mounting screws). So, back out for a new heat sink. But, the motherboard apparently either has a plate behind it that puts screw holes in the mounting holes, or there's just screw holes mounted in the board.

So Wolfie at this point decides that dealing with that would be more headache than he wants to deal with. Not to mention that my processor has been operating with a not fully attached heat sink for like six months. (Pentium 4s are apparently very robust and resilient.) And so out we go again and get a new motherboard, new processor, new ram, and a new case since my old case is one of those HP super-economical cramped things. (If I ever decide I want to upgrade to a raid array, my case is very nicely designed for it with two hard drive bays that easily pull out and super fan-age. The case was $90 off.)

After many hours of moving stuff from old case to new case, installing, and troubleshooting, I now have a perfectly working computer again. Much thanks to Wolfie and Geoff. I swear, the entire thing was like fixing a car, but for geeks.

And that's all not including Thanksgiving. That's right, we went out on black friday and on saturday.
