I've been a fan of Rick Riordan's YA books ever since miyyu recommended The Lightning Thief several years back. I've meant since that time to check out his mystery novels for adults as well, but just recently got around to reading the first one, Big Red TequilaThe main character, Tres Navarre, has just returned to his hometown of San Antonio, TX, for ( Read more... )

Yes, the chapter titles are one of my very favorite things about the Percy Jackson books! But I highly recommend everything about them :) I was hoping the Tres Navarre books would also have entertaining chapter titles, but this one didn't. I'm still holding out hope for the later books...

As far as the Julia Spencer-Fleming books, I'm not sure. Reading the first one first would definitely be preferable, both in terms of getting to know and getting attached to the characters and because I'm not sure I'd have enjoyed the second one as much without having read the first? I'm going to try to say this as vaguely as possible so as not to give away the plot, but there were a couple scenes that were difficult to read. I guess that's not surprising for a mystery/crime story, but for as much as I read and watch mysteries and cop shows, I'm very easily squicked by violence.* But I kept going because, having already read the first book, I felt that I could trust the author. Overall, I've rarely been squicked by this series, and I've found reading it to be very worthwhile, but just felt like I should maybe mention if you're going to start with Book 2?

*I do love zombie movies, but those aren't real, so it's different.

Off to check out the fic :)

Thank you for the warning. I don't get squicked out by violence ... More the Xrated stuff that I find hard to identify with like M/M slash. That's what I find hard to read and watch. I don't like zombie movies so I guess in that respect we're like black and white!
