Two Mondays ago, txduck recommended a mystery series by Julia Spencer-Fleming. The series is set in the small upstate New York town of Millers Kill ("kill" is an old Dutch word for creek or river and often used in that area, though it is certainly also apt as the setting for murder mysteries) and focuses primarily on the town's new Episcopal priest, ( Read more... )

I adore Clare and Russ! They're such excellent characters. In fact, I'm kicking myself for getting so distracted with all of the stuff I wanted to put into this post that the paragraph about why I love Clare completely got lost (I'll add that shortly). There was just so much to say!

I'm glad you agree about the similarities between Jack and Russ (after all, it might just have been my Stargate-warped brain making the connection!). But I see a lot in common, particularly the career where you can't tell your spouse or other family about what you do and the stresses that would cause. Also the strong devotion to their teams and the somewhat warped sense of humor that doesn't always come to the surface except with the right person. One thing I especially love about Russ and Clare is that in the midst of all the angst, they make each other laugh a lot. It's a great balance.

I definitely do see what you mean about the similarities between Clare and Sam, particularly that they're both extremely confident in a military context but unsure of themselves personally. There aren't as many similarities as between Jack and Russ, but they're enough to bring my mind back to several half-finished S/J fics that I now want to get back to! (including one for the free-for-all, though I probably won't get it finished on time, or at least not betaed...)

Back to Book 6! I'm so torn between wanting to see what happens (this is the first one where I have an idea what might happen at the end) and not wanting it to be over! :)
