On a fannish note, Castle! I'm officially smitten. I was hooked by the first disc of season one, but it just gets better and better! I love every single character, and really, how often does that happen? Mostly just in Bones, and I must say that I love the shows for a lot of the same reasons, though despite their similarities, they're both unique and fantastic in their own way. But back to Castle: since I'm in that wonderful watching-this-show-feels-like-having-a-crush mode, I'm going to ramble on about it for a bit :)
Nathan Fillion is just amazing! I've watched him in Buffy and Firefly, and much as I love those, after such serious roles, it's a treat to see him play such a funny, flippant character. But of course, there's so much more to Rick Castle than that, and basically every scene with him and Alexis makes me love him more. For all his irresponsibility, he's such an amazing dad. In that way (though not others), he sort of reminds me of Lorelai Gilmore, though that may have something to do with the fact that I'm doing a Gilmore Girls rewatch at the same time I'm devouring Castle. And the fact that poor grammar is a pet peeve of Castle's just squared my love for him, if not cubed it!
Alexis is an amazing (and also kind of Rory-like) kid herself; she's a wonderful combination of youthful exuberance - and sometimes innocence - with wisdom far beyond her years and compassion far beyond most people's. And Martha? Hilarious! She could hardly be more awesome. If I were going to be a grandmother, which I'm not, I'd love to be one sort of like her - the constant glass of red wine very much included!
On to the folks at the precinct, wow, Beckett is just phenomenal. I realized long ago that nothing makes me love a show like an ass-kicking woman, and there Kate Beckett is! She's brave and tough and doesn't take shit from anyone, but she's also fiercely loving and thoughtful and sweet (that episode where Alexis volunteered at the station? *tears up*). And one of the things I love most about her is how delightfully evil she can be in torturing Castle. Given how insanely good he is at reading people, his gullibility when it comes to her is hysterical, though she gets most of the credit, because she's so damn good at messing with him. I love it!
Ryan and Esposito are fabulous and adorable, and it would be an entirely different - and way less fun - show without them. Like all good partners, they balance and complement each other so well. Lanie is smart and funny and great, and I love that she never holds back in telling the other characters what they might not want to admit to themselves (especially Beckett, but we'll get to the shippiness a little bit later). Captain Montgomery is awesome, too; he's (as Gorgak would say) "a forceful and effective administrator" but still totally badass when the need arises (in "Kill the Messenger," for example).
As we all know, I've always had a thing for the partner dynamic in shows, and I end up shipping them pretty much always. So, of course, I knew I'd end up shipping Castle/Beckett eventually. But I kind of like that the show doesn't beat you over the head with it. Throughout the whole first season, I appreciated the undertones, but I wasn't dying for more shippiness the way I often am. The characters needed time to get to know each other, and I like that they kept things subtle and didn't make a potential romance the whole point of the show. As far as I've yet gotten (two-thirds to three-quarters of the way through season two), the show is doing the slow build-up incredibly well. At this point, I do want more shippy moments, but it's not time for them to get together yet - not just for the progression of the show, but also for the characters themselves - and wow, for a show to make me think that? Rare and amazing, to say the least. Which is not to say that I'm not looking forward to reading fic when I'm caught up on the show, though sadly, that will probably take a few weeks. Pesky work.
I could go on, but this is really quite enough rambling for one day, and I should save some of the squee for future episodes. I can't wait to watch more! ♥
Edit: I meant to say this last night but got distracted and forgot: thank you to everyone on my flist who has posted about how great the show is and got me curious enough to check it out. I'm so happy that all of you did!
