adventures in cooking

My mom bought Sean kitchen stuff last Christmas.  Why she chose kitchen stuff for a 13 year old boy when our tiny kitchen is already bursting at the seams I'm not sure, but there we were.   The pizza making set had stayed safely tucked away--until last night.

Sean decided he needed to open it up and get cracking on some pizza.  We looked up a pizza dough recipe, I made out a grocery list and off he went to find the things we didn't have.  He called at least twice to ask where to find things.  Shortening, yeast, and so on.  I did not realize that my one set of measuring spoons has gone MIA.  I'm sure they were removed from the kitchen for medication dosing and simply never returned.  This posed a small problem in measuring the small amount of needed sugar.

I did not help physically, but I told him where to find the necessary equipment, read out the recipe and advised him on how to put it together.  These are better things for me to do as I tend to take over and then it would've been my pizza and  he'd not have had much of a hand in making it.  He ended up calling my brother for advice as Shem and Faith make pizza regularly.  Shem advised him on temperature and bake times and it sounded like Sean had it under control.

I need to remember to tell him to stay near the kitchen when he's cooking.  After about ten minutes he checked and the pizza wasn't ready, so he decided to seek the comfort of his den-like room.  Shortly after his door closed, I smelled... yep, burning.  I yelled for Sean and went into the kitchen to find steam coming from the stove top and the damn oven door in the locked/cleaning position!

Long story shorter, the pizza sat in the oven with the oven off for several hours until my dad could come by to  help us try to unjam the locking mechanism.  Sean found the pizza to still be edible, so that was his dinner.  I tried a bite.  Uhm... yeah, I couldn't tell you how it tasted because I couldn't get past the taste of the super sweet dough.  Kind of a Chef Boyardee taste.  I do hope he'll try again.  We'll get the correct accoutrements and find a better dough recipe next time.
