Lidia is a modified human. Her body has been changed that the appropriate touches will make her produce music, the same goes for her sister Nia.
The political system she lives under is fiefdom, so she has little choice. Her ruler, Belari, is having a big do, and the Fluted Girls will be a major entertainment. The girls also are a way for Belari to become independent herself, if they make her a lot of money after their years of modification and training.
Lidia tries to hide, but no joy. Belari's chameleon hiding servant tracks her down before she can poison the food that will be served at the dinner. She has gone that far because Belari has actually cooked one of her servants that attacked her, and she will serve him at the dinner as part of the meal.
However, Lidia manages to hide the poison. She gets the opportunity to have a strawberry to eat, and poisons it to kill herself in defiance. However, at the last moment an idea strikes, as she offers the strawberry to Belari as a sign of servitude.
