I stopped in the hallway, still not wishing to meet his eyes. It was painful enough the first time, telling Mal that I would be leaving Serenity, and now I would have to ask his permission to stay aboard.
He might be spiteful enough to tell me no.
"Mal," I began, dropping all pretences and formalities of rank, "I spoke with Kaylee."
This would be a good way to begin; to let him know she was doing better.
"She needed someone to speak to," my eyes flicked up to his, then away again, "and I believe I was able to help her regarding her ordeal with Early. I'm certain she would wish to speak with you, however. Your relationship with her is...special."
I paused and drew in a deep breath. I couldn't stall any longer.
"And...in my conversation with her, she made me realize something. About myself. About...Serenity."
About you Mal, even if you do not know it.
"I've changed my mind." My eyes found their way to his and stopped. I held his gaze as I admitted all I could to him for now.
"I am requesting that I remain aboard Serenity."
