I've been burning the candle at both ends for... at least a good month now, and last night I finally arrived at the inevitable consequence of such behavior: lurgy. Fever, sweats and chills, and horrible muscles aches that had me convinced that even my hair was hurting. Urgh. I went to bed relatively early, tossed and turned all night (hot or cold, body--pick one and stick with it) and woke up feeling like 8 hours of sleep wasn't nearly enough. So today has been a sick day, spent primarily on the couch, huddled under multiple blankets. Fever's less, but I'm exhausted and achy, have a pounding headache and my brain is foggy. Blech.
No appetite, but I made myself eat some fruit and a bowl of Udon soup, which was comforting. Have fallen asleep for stretches without meaning to do it. I have other things I've been meaning to blog about, but I'm as sharp as a lump of wet Kleenex, so that will have to wait. Attempts to write have been similarly thwarted, so I think I'm just going to have to surrender to the exhaustion and spend my waking time watching Homicide: Life on the Street and basking in the healing power of Richard Belzer. (Thanks for inspiring me, PJ!)
In the meantime,
samantha_vimes tagged me for this meme, and since that's about all I handle, here goes.
First: If you've been tagged, you must write your answers in your own LJ and replace any question that you dislike with a new question.
Second: Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.
What kind of books do you read?
It would really be easier to say what sort of books I don't read, which is to say "not many." The only sections that I don't visit at all in a bookstore are Romance (ugh), Sports (also ugh), test prep manuals and business books (which are typically written by morons of the first order). Everything else is fair game. Ooh, except for so-called "chick lit," which, while I hate that derisive and dismissive term, is very much not my thing.
What's the weirdest thing you've seen today?
...Really not the sort of question to ask somebody who's ill. I'm just saying.
What do you think is really creepy?
The propensity of people to be ruled by their darkest, most hateful fears and selfishness, rather than their amazing potential for nurturing growth and change. That's creepier than any horror film.
What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
HP and Snape, as always, but there's also BPAL and coffee (addictions), 30 Rock and the NCAA basketball tournament (obsessions) and various other fandoms, from Pet Shop of Horrors to House and Jeeves and Wooster and Good Omens.
Why are you on your computer indoors on such a lovely day?
I'm sick as a dog and laid out on the couch, trying to recuperate. The laptop is a lovely and entertaining source of warmth.
What websites do you always visit when you go online?
LJ, work e-mail, Gmail, the Slate, the Detroit Free Press and Washington Post online, MSNBC.com.
What was the last thing you bought?
A few groceries from the Italian market: pecorino cheese, sweet onions, Pink Lady apples, pasta, a jar of vodka sauce.
How do you think you'll die?
I have no idea, but I hope it's in my sleep, when I've lived a full life.
Do you get cravings? If so, what do you crave?
It depends. Sometimes I crave chocolate, sometime pasta, sometimes a juicy cheeseburger, sometimes comfort food and sometimes fresh fruit and produce... but I probably crave bread more than anything. Freshly baked bread, with that crackling crust and dense, chewy, satisfyingly elastic texture... ~eyes glaze over~
What do you do to change your mood?
Mentally compose scathing responses and then toss them away, do yoga, take deep breaths, redirect my attention to something that soothes me, like cooking or gardening or writing. I try to discipline my thoughts, find the root of what's bothering me and find a logical course of action to address it.
Do you want to learn another language?
I'm always up for it! I've taught myself some half-assed Italian and Spanish--enough to get the gist of a conversation, but not enough to be able to converse, unless you want to talk about where the shoe store is. I'd like to be able to speak them properly. Russian and Chinese also interest me.
Five things you can't live without?
Coffee, books, cats, asthma meds, a sense of humor
Replacement question: do you prefer being in a relationship or celibate?
Haven't had much of a choice about the celibacy, but I can't say it's particularly enjoyable, so... yeah, I'd prefer the relationship, I think. I'm not the sort who enjoys being single; I don't think I'm designed for it. Oh, irony...
What's something you'd like to say to yourself right now?
Work, white blood cells! Do your jobs, and be quick about it!
What are you looking forward to?
Feeling better.
I'm not tagging anybody, no matter what that dictatorial meme says. I can't think enough to string eight names together. :-P
