I ventured into the world of plants last year by getting myself a cactus, for several different reasons which I won't go into.  I have learned a lot since day 1, such as the fact that cacti need sunlight for nutrients, and without adequate sunlight they will grow etoliated and thin.  Water deprivation causes the flesh of the cactus to shrink.  I need to re-pot it because the soil does not have adequate drainage, and if I am not careful in my watering I could cause the roots to rot.

Today, I had to operate.  My cactus had some unhealthy looking spots in the middle, possibly rot or infected bug bites.  You are able to cut off pieces of a columnar cactus and re-plant them because they will grow new roots and be right as rain.  I used a sterile knife and cleaned up with hydrogen peroxide to prevent infection, so we will see how she fairs.  I'd post pics, but my stomach is directing me to eat food instead.
