meat CSAs

i <3 my veggie CSA. it's seriously one of the best things ever, in terms of the actual product as well as the cause.

however, i have to say that i think organic/local/"socially responsible" vegetables make less of a difference than organic/local/"socially responsible" meat.

i had no idea, however, that they had meat CSAs!
some info/justifications
and there are at least 3 in the bay area, all of which deliver to locations in SF that are reasonable to get to

i'm really itching to sign up.  i'm holding myself back, though -- or, rather, the following factors are holding me back:
  • i don't eat that much meat.  the smallest share i can get is 7 lbs per month.  i do not eat anywhere NEAR that much meat (that i cooked myself).  i probably eat 3 or 4 pounds of meat per month at home.  it's possible that i wouldn't mind eating that much meat if i had it, and maybe it would even be better for me, but this also means that i'm not used to paying for that quantity of meat.  i would have to share it with someone, and even then it seems like a lot.
  • speaking of paying, it's not cheap!  that 7-lb share i was talking about, that's $65, which comes to $9.28/lb -- that's WAY more than i would pay for *any* cut of meat in a grocery store!  i mean, i get it -- the meat industry is the way it is because that's the way to ring the price down, and if i want to take a stand that it's unconscionable (is that a word?), i have to not insist on those prices.  but still!
  • you have to commit for 3 months.  that's so long!!
  • my friends in san francisco are largely vegetarians, non-red-meat-eaters, or living in vegetarian households with meat-free kitchens.
so actually, i would sign up immediately if i could get someone to split with me.  (in other words, the only one of these reservation that's an actual hurdle for me is the first.)  the other 3 reservations are more about convincing someone to split with me.

*sigh*
