The King's Taxes

Feb 18, 2008 14:31

And here I thought that taxes in MN were retarded, at best.

I spent a bit of time reading the responses from this gem of a thread about taxes, courtesy of MSN's Money Central board.

I didn't reply to the post, but I found some of the responses to be interesting/informative/baffling (a tax for the "privilege" to work, what?!). I'm throwing my own 2 cents in: I'm in complete agreement with the posters who aren't amused by the property tax... The more I think about it, the more I want to bean whoever thought of it right over the head with the nearest heavy object. It got my brain gerbils running: I own my home. Sort-of. It's completely paid for, but I still have to pay a monthly lot rent (that just went up $12), as well as property tax. Now. Technically, I could move this beast off of the property to somewhere else. However, the mounting expenses for the required permits, contractors, equipment, etc. would make the effort cost prohibitive. If I cannot pay my lot rent, I'm evicted just as a renter would be. If I don't own the home outright and am evicted, I'm still responsible for the mortgage payments on a place that I cannot legally live in.
OK, so say that I've had enough & I want to abandon ship permanently.  If I cannot sell my home as a private party (& only after The Park has formally accepted the interested buyer as a potential resident; at least the application fee for the interested party is refundable if denied), the current fee for selling a home through the mobile home park's agent is 23%.

These days, I don't have to look very far for something that drives me crazy nuts.

Who can we complain to? Who can we demand justice from? Who can we negotiate with?

And people ask me why I'm not ultra-involved with politics... Folks, I couldn't try to spread myself that thin. So maybe, for now... I will just concentrate on encouraging people to know who runs what, and why, at a state level. Even better, on a local level.

It's taken me a damned long time to wake up & smell what I've been stepping in. It's mind-boggling, the depth of the shit we're in. One thing that's becoming clearer to me is that if you think you're "not into" politics, you're sadly mistaken on one level. Every time you turn on your TV, turn on your lights, buy groceries or some jockey shorts, you're into a level of politics.

And now I'm going to shut up & get ready for work.

politics, rant
