"I've got the light. Stay next to me. Ready? Go..."
That was the last Barney had heard from either Gordon or Alyx in person; when they were split up in the labyrinth. He'd fought tooth and nail to keep alive without a weapon in the rapidly-decaying City 17. Luckily, he still had a jury-rigged radio from the battle earlier, and had called out, chagrined, for a squad to help him out. The hours that he waited in a deserted building, praying to anyone and everyone that there wasn't something lurking somewhere, or more Combine attempting to patrol, were some of the longest of his life. When he had finally reached the safehouse, he was able to reach Eli and Dr. Kleiner, who told him that the other two were going into the core to try to buy some time. If Barney had the opportunity to dwell on it, he'd be worried sick. But as it stood, he had to take advantage of that extra time to get whoever was still left in City 17 to places where they'd be safe until everything was mapped out, and Gordon and Alyx were out of danger.
After grabbing some food, Barney found a rusty submachine gun and some ammo. He felt guilty, leaving his weapon at home, because they were so short on supplies already. But the Resistance had insisted, and the fact is, he needed to stay alive. And to stay alive, he had to have a weapon. There was a crowbar he'd found upon arrival, but he always saved those for Gordon, who had a bad habit of losing them. Supplies taken care of, Barney went to go find the squads that were gonna help him gather everybody up.
"God, if you're listening..." he said, walking toward the TV room, "please, help us get these poor people to White Forest. Please."
