New Show tonight, which was, I have to say, both scary as hell and continued the trend from "Retaliation" of placeholder, breather eps after the double-whammy of "100" and "Slave of Duty".
Just a few notes:
- So, did I miss an entire chunk of the episode? Because every single website/news outlet/magazine has been advertising this ep as "Hotch has trouble returning to his job", and there was absolutely nothing to indicate that. Seems to me he's just stepped right back into being Unit Chief again, and Morgan's back to a regular agent.
- Reid, on the other hand . . . oh, honey. You are not over those daddy abandonment issues of yours. Because you're still missing Gideon, still trying to find him in chessboards and your supervisory agents, and you're still getting whumped with cases dealing with mental issues and abuse of the mentally ill. You're still playing the same game over and over, expecting to find some new strategy that leads to an outcome where you don't get hurt, and maybe you're finally starting to learn. Nice to see you off the crutches and cane-free, too.
- AUGH WTF HALLUCINATIONS OF FALLING-OFF LIMBS ARE NOT ON, SHOW. Between the girl's hallucinations and the paralytic drip that kept the other victims trapped inside themselves, I've got enough High Octane Nightmare Fuel for a few months, thanks.
- Although, speaking of the victims, I really appreciate that this week's main victim, who was set up to be even more of one with her diabetes, was one of the strongest in a long time. She got to a phone, pulled the IVs out of the other girls for a while, and stalled the UnSub long enough to let Reid get through to her.
- Aaaand the latest addition to the Beloved Childhood Actor Dissonance Hall of Fame is Jonathan Frakes (Riker on TNG) playing a pedophile psychologist. Subtly frightening as hell and got an amazing performance out of Matthew Gray Gubler. Not that I don't think MGG is good, but the scene between Reid and Dr. Malcolm (with Rossi playing good cop/referee) was just fantastic. Reid knows exactly what those toys were, and Malcolm doesn't want to admit that Reid's right, and the address is just dragged out of him when Reid profiles him so accurately.
- Ohhh, Dave. You're still learning, but today was a good Dad day. Hotch made the quick inter-team profile of "oh shit, we're not letting Reid near an abusive psychologist alone", but Dave brings it home, backing Reid up extremely subtly (for Uncle Dave) and telling him he did good after they secure the UnSub without anyone getting hurt.
- Still not sure what to make of Emily's Look to Morgan at the end of the ep, or her complete recovery from last week's whumpage, but our favorite Trek geek got the redshirt reference.
And next week, we're apparently getting JJ backstory! I like JJ backstory. I'd like it even more if it wasn't just once a season, but oh well.
