You know... I never really realized before just how oppressive it is to date same-sex in public here in the springs. Let me preface this by mentioning I'm seeing a woman again, we've gone out a couple times. She's genderqueer like myself, but newer to the idea. She's a few years older than me, and yes she knows I'm asexual. At night it isn't so noticeable. I mean, people look, but whatever. It's easy to ignore in the dark. But in the daylight, just going and having a conversation over lunch... suddenly we became everyone's business! I'm used to getting secret stares and comments based on how I look, but I'm not used to being openly gawked at and talked about and pointed at by children and adults alike. There are straight couples eating together and nobody cares, there are straight bi-racial couples and nobody stares (thank god there's at least that), but ...well, I'm just shocked to realize how much in the spotlight queer still is.
